1. Comments on Data Vizers (Group 5)

By Hengqiao Rong

For group Data Vizers, they firstly described their motivation in designing sketches and data visualization. This could enhance geist understanding and make us have a better sense of what we are doing. Then they briefly introduced what they have done in the three sessions. But some detailed interruptions concerning the graphs and pictures were still not revealed. However, it is great to see them showing their passion for their work.

In the aspect of design space on Miro, I am very surprised to have a glance at their creative mindmap. In the center, it is a circle full of colorful and amazing graphs as well as their flows and connections. We could see their basic logic structure from macro-perspective to micro-perspective. And they showed their preference for multi-line charts to visualize high-dimensional data. And they also combined their thoughts with graphs to show how they think, what they do, and why they apply this design.

It is very interesting to see a combination of flexible pictures and text, but in my view, it seems a little bit diffuse. I think in the latter two sessions, more graphs and diagrams should be arranged with more organization. And clear ideas combining elements should be based on the graphs and features of pictures. However, I have more insights into the thinking road map instead of the design space to some extent. In general, they did a wonderful job and I believe that they could make it more perfect later on!

For the first sketch combination, it may be much clearer if there is a sketch of the output of the combination in the blog. There are 4 components in an image with low resolution. I’m still a little bit confused after going through the description and have to turn to the miro board. There may be too much detailed information in one geographic sketch, especially when there are many countries (I don’t know how many countries are contained in the data, if only a few, you can ignore the sentence). Can it be divided into two or more sketches? or maybe you can only choose several representative countries.

The second sketch is ambiguous, but I don’t think it’s convenient to have a comparison if you just put the raw detailed information on the leaves instead of dealing with and summarizing them.

The third one is great. One last piece of advice is that it would be really important to design the legend in the third sketch to make sure it’s intuitive enough.

3. Comments on WHW (Group 11)

By Tianchen Wang

For the blog of team WHW, the novelty of their topic attracts me at the very beginning; they managed to investigate the relationship between trust to entities and well-being in European countries by using multiple variables, such as happiness, optimism, safety, etc. I am very fond of this topic since there are more than 40 countries with approximately 750 million people in Europe, for which their cultures, costumes, and beliefs could vary significantly across countries. Therefore it will be interesting to see how those factors contribute to their topic.

In addition, the overall structure of the blog is very well-structured. The storyline is clear to me. In detail, the three sections in the visual description part, diverge, emerge, and converge, give an informative idea in terms of what the team will do, and how they are going to visualize them.

Lastly, there are a few suggestions to comment on. As I said, the relationship between trust to entities and well-being can be indeed interesting. However, it could be even more intriguing if you can dive deeper, and make the research more broadly. For instance, you could search for more variables such as beliefs and income-level for each observation, then try to explain some latent structures behind the research question. Furthermore, in the micro board you have created, both diverge and emerge part presents well-rounded and nice-looking pictures. Nevertheless, there is only one image in the last converge part, I believe there must be more attractive emerging images to explore.

The choice of topic is interesting since retail alcohol sales take up a big proportion of tax revenue in the USA. It is meaningful to study the data to get an idea of the alcohol market in the USA. The background of the dataset is very detailed, however, the details about your motivation and your research questions are missing in your first blog. I think it could be better if you talk about the research questions in the project introduction so that the readers could have an idea of what to expect in the later stage of your project.

In terms of the second blog, even though there are graphical demonstrations about some interesting features, the explanations of those plots are missing. Personally, I reckon combining your graphs with some explanation will facilitate the reader's further understanding of your data. Furthermore, from your illustration of the data features, I see there are plenty of attributes with different types of properties. I believe it is a dataset that you could do a lot of things with. A little comment for the figures of columns you have attached in the second blog, it could be better if you could export your word document as pdf file and then screenshot the table from the pdf file, in this way, you can get rid of the annoying paragraph ‘enter’ marks in the figures. Anyway, little thing matters.

Lastly, for your visual design, generally speaking, you did a good job. Your visual design is comprehensive and creative with plenty of sketches. I can see that you have put a lot of effort into this session. I especially like the idea of the first sketch in the diverge stage, the tree design for liquor categories and items is quite interesting and innovative. However, in terms of the second sketch in the diverge stage --"the profit of vendors", I didn’t quite get what you mean in the blog about “this sketch represents price gap between the manufacturers and vendors, which is profit of vendors”, does it mean price gap or the profit of vendors? The expression is a bit ambiguous. Maybe you should modify it a bit. The converge stage in the visual design is very interesting with a lot of aggregations, if you could generate some new sketches from those aggregations, it will dramatically increase the entire quality of your visual design.
